What is

Employee Engagement?

Employee Engagement Tips & Advice

In simple terms, employee engagement is about creating a workplace culture that encourages a commitment to the values and goals of the business and improves performance on a consistent basis, as well as overall wellbeing for all employees. It is more than creating job satisfaction; it's about employees feeling an emotional connection to the business. The HR professional body, CIPD, described employee engagement as “being positively present during the performance of work by willingly contributing intellectual effort, experiencing positive emotions and meaningful connections…”

Benefits of Employee Engagement

  • Better Service, Productivity and Quality - a loyal employee who feels emotionally committed to the values of the business will work harder and more consistently.
  • Increased Sales and Greater Customer Satisfaction - better service and happier loyal employees = happier customers and more sales.
  • Greater Profits – 2012 Gallup survey* showed the top quartile in employee engagement outperformed the bottom quartile in profitability by 22%.
  • Better Employee Retention and Recruitment – Gallup survey* showed significantly lower turnover of employees PLUS lower absenteeism and safety incidents in the top quartile.

How to Improve Employee Engagement

  • Inspiring leadership – a hands-on leader who shows they care about their employees, is approachable, leads by example, communicates regularly and is passionate about the business and its values.
  • Transparency – communicating what is happening within the business discourages a feeling of management vs employees and prevents rumour and fear-mongering.
  • Opportunities for Growth and Career Progression - help employees recognise their strengths and understand the opportunities available to them.
  • Sense of Purpose and Ownership - set goals and help employees see a link between what they do and how that contributes to the business. Show them they have a voice and their feedback is heard and taken seriously.
How to Improve Employee Engagement

Focus on your team

  • Recognition and Rewards – celebrate accomplishments and hitting targets and show employees that they are valued for all they do. Not just financial rewards; a simple “thank you” for a job well done makes a big difference.
  • People-focused – profits are important but your employees are your greatest asset. Encourage better work-life balance and an environment where they feel they are valued.
  • Engage from Day One – new employees are usually eager to get started and ready to learn. Endless manuals about best practice and company policy will not encourage this . Find ways to keep this enthusiasm while sharing the company's values and goals.
